Retrofit Gas Meter Modules Compared: MeterLink Gen-1 vs Tata Communications vs Genus Intellilog vs Esyasoft vs DSPWorks

Five retrofit modules that put an installed diaphragm gas meter on a network, for a city gas distribution company weighing its options. The differences are the reading method, whether prepaid enforcement and a valve are included, the battery claim, LoRaWAN on the utility's own gateways against an operator's network, and what each maker states about ingress and hazardous areas. MeterLink is the only one of the five with prepaid credit and a valve; it states IP65 and no hazardous-area approval, and this comparison says so.

Where each fits

What the table means for your site

Where MeterLink Gen-1 fits

A CGD or a society that wants prepaid enforcement and remote shutoff on an installed G1.6 meter base, on LoRaWAN gateways it owns with no SIM per meter, from a maker in Pune. Tamper events and larger meter sizes are confirmed per project rather than claimed.

Where the Tata Communications module fits

A CGD that wants connectivity as a service on an operator's LoRaWAN network, with removal and magnet tamper reporting and a five-year battery claim; no prepaid or valve.

Where the Genus Intellilog g-Setu fits

A utility that wants a meter interface unit with a ten-year battery claim, LoRaWAN or NB-IoT, and the maker's stated hazardous-area approvals; reading only, no valve.

Where the Esyasoft ES-7020-LW-4E fits

Projects that read over wireless M-Bus as well as LoRaWAN, on EU868 at 14 dBm, with a stated IP65 enclosure; reading only.

Where the DSPWorks gas AMR module fits

A clip-on reader with magnet, vibration and case-removal tamper detection, NB-IoT and LoRa dual mode, IP67 and a ten-year claim at daily reads; reading only.

Questions

Choosing between them

MeterLink Gen-1 alone among the five, with credit held and enforced in the module and an inline valve driven by it. The other four are reading modules; prepaid in their case is done at the billing system, with disconnection by a field visit or a separate valve.

MeterLink Gen-1, the Genus unit in its LoRaWAN variant and the Esyasoft module. The Tata Communications module runs on the operator's LoRaWAN network, and the DSPWorks module offers NB-IoT alongside LoRa.

MeterLink Gen-1, Genus and Esyasoft state IP65 and DSPWorks IP67; Tata and DSPWorks state tamper events. MeterLink Gen-1's tamper events are not yet published and are supplied on its specification sheet on request.
